Faith in Action: The Father Rivera Story. Part 3.

During the investigation into Father Reynaldo’s murder, several letters were sent to various government agencies, the Archdiocese and a few Catholic churches that claimed that Father Reynaldo was murdered because he had something to do with the civil wars in Latin America.

Several civil wars had broken out in Central and South America during the 60s. These wars lasted well into the 90s, and Catholic priests who were ministering to various Indigenous peoples in those areas were put in the middle of those civil wars. These wars were very much about the rich against the poor. While the rich had backing by the US government, the poor had missionary priests who were only armed in faith, many of which would become martyrs for staying with the people.

Even if they couldn’t protect those people, they ministered to them.

Faith in Action pt. 2

Father Reynaldo and his brothers in the church were at Mass where the service was just ending when a call came into the rectory. Father Gerard Geier answered the call. It was around 8:00 in the evening.

The caller was a man who Geier estimated to be in his 30s. He told Father Geier that he needed a priest.

His voice was calm and deliberate, and . . . . convincing. Neither Father Geier nor Father Reynaldo had any reason to think that these calls were nefarious in any way.

“My grandfather has had a heart attack and I need a priest to come and give Last Rites. I’m at the rest stop going towards Albuquerque. I need someone to meet me here.”

Father Geier asked him where his grandfather’s home was.

“He lives off the highway toward Waldo. I need a priest to meet me here so I can take him to his house.”

Father Geier explained that he couldn’t come. He had bad eyesight and could no longer drive at night. He told the caller that the other priests were in church, but that Mass would end shortly. He asked the caller for a number where one of them could call him back.

“I’m at a pay phone at the rest stop. This phone doesn’t have a phone number.”

Then, the caller said something very odd, “In case you want my name, it’s Michael Carmello.”

Father Geier asked Michael if he was looking for a specific priest to come perform Last Rites.

“No, any priest can come.”

Girly Chew Hossencoft

his case is technically a murder case but unfortunately the body of the victim has never been found and it happened over 20 years ago. Much of the information I found helpful in researching this case was in the book September Sacrifice by Mark Horner. I highly recommend people pick up Mark’s book if they want a more in-depth look at the case.
