This case has been baffling investigators and family for the last 20 years. There have been some recent developments that seemed promising on the face and led to renewed hope. Today I am taking you through the tragic disappearance of 7-year-old Robbie Romero from Santa Fe, NM. This case is especially difficult because it is unsolved. There were so many leads and people identified that it was extremely difficult to know what is relevant and what is not. I am going to try and present you with as much information as possible. Please note that not all of it is relevant. I felt it was important to show you how much information there is and how many false leads there were. It is a lot of detail to digest in one sitting which is why I am breaking this case in two parts. On August 31st,2003 a Las Cruces couple decided to take an afternoon to do some target practice near the foothills in Las Cruces New Mexico. As they were driving around, they noticed a woman lying in the desert. The couple got out of their vehicle to investigate and noticed that the woman was not responsive. They called 911 for assistance.

Billy the kid was one of the most notorious outlaws in the 1800s and his story has been sensationalized and blown out of proportion so I am going to attempt to tell you the story as close to the truth as I can determine. This version of Billy the Kid isn’t as sexy as many listeners are used to so I apologize for that in advance. But like I said his story has been sensationalized and a certain mythos has been created around his life. Henry McCarty was born on November 23rd (according to some) 1859 in New York City, New York. He was raised in poverty in New York with his mom and father. It is believed that he took the now famous alias of William H. Bonney by using the name of his mom’s boyfriend and her maiden name.

Victoria Martens was born on August 23rd, 2006. According to classmates, she was a sweet and thoughtful young girl. Victoria lived in Albuquerque with her mom, Michelle Martens, and her little brother. Victoria’s story is one of the worst child abuse cases in New Mexico history. Her senseless death was absolutely avoidable and should have never happened. She is one of the countless children that the state of New Mexico has forgotten. Her death would ignite the fear and outrage of the community. The initial details were so alarming that people were left wondering how something so grotesque and harrowing could happen to a sweet young girl. Then the entire case was at risk because of false and misleading statements made by witnesses, suspects, and even police.

You may remember my friend Edna from part 2 and 3 of Jacob’s story. Edna had come to know a person named Patricia Platero as she was working with her to try a domestic violence case against a man who had beat Patricia up. Edna is very connected to this case both personally and professionally. While recording one of Jacob’s episodes Edna brought this case up and I asked her if she would be willing to share Patricia’s story on this show. I am grateful that she agreed to it. So today I am joined by Enda and we are discussing the unsolved murder of Patricia Platero.

Today’s case is a tough one. What happened near Springer in January 1976 blew the lid off the priest abuse scandal in New Mexico. You see, priests in NM and elsewhere had been abusing children for decades prior to this case. The details of this story are beyond disturbing, but the one positive thing that came out of it was that the truth was finally uncovered. Justice, however, is still eluding many of the victims of the NM Priest abuse scandal.

Today’s case deals with the plot to steal nuclear secrets from the US by the Soviet Union. And because this show is what it is, it will address these issues as they pertain to the beautiful state of New Mexico. 

Imagine it’s a normal fall afternoon. You and your family are going about your normal daily business. Your child sets out to do something they do every day and you think nothing of it. After all, they do this all the time. Imagine your child disappears seemingly out of thin air. That panic. The moment of realizing that you may never see them again. The sinking stomach and intense fear. This is what Patty Doel, of Belen, NM experienced in 1988 when her daughter Tara Calico ventured out on her daily bike ride. The afternoon of September 20th would be the last time that Tara Calico was seen by her family and friends.
